An Interview With Small Business Owner Jennifer Irving

Princess Tiara Antique Brass FlexiClip

Meet Lilla Rose Consultant Jennifer Irving

I’m a mother of twins and an independent consultant for Lilla Rose.  I know how aggravating it can be to spend dollar after dollar on a clip that won’t fit because you have hair that is baby fine or thick, and have been forgotten about in the one-size-fits-all hair accessory industry.  I sell an item called the Flexi Clip.  The Flexi Clip allows busy women to quickly and affordably put their hair on display in a matter of minutes, without subjecting your hair to damaging Claws and elastic bands.

What led you to start your business?

I have 8 year old autistic twin boys and a terminally ill father.  I realized that family is really more important than anything else.  I wanted something that would let me be with my family as they need me, but still contribute to my family.  I took my love of Lilla Rose and their beautiful hair clips, and became a consultant!

Hair Sticks Freestyle

Do you have any advice for those who’d like to start a business?

Do all the research you can!  It’s more work than hanging out a sign saying you’re open for business.  You need to learn about sales, customer service, and how to run a business.  Take advantage of all the training out there on the internet that you can!

What do you like most/least about your business?

I actually LOVE my products!  I had a ton of clips before I started my own business. Lilla Rose has offered me the opportunity to be with my children and my father when they need me the most, by working when it’s convenient for me.

The Top Five Art Galleries in the United Kingdom

Are you a fan of beautiful art? If so the United Kingdom has some of the best art galleries in the world. The team behind Tint Art, a new destination to buy original photographic art, and guest author Aaron Hopkins have compiled their top 5 art galleries. Which is your favourite? Leave us a comment below!

If you are looking for fun things to do in the UK this summer, or are visiting for the first time, you may want to consider a trip to one of the country’s top art galleries. In this article  we will talk you through what we believe to be the top five art galleries in the United Kingdom.

Tate Modern Museum by ReservasdeCoches on flickr

The Tate Modern is one of the best galleries to visit if you love contemporary works of art.

1. Tate Galleries, London, Liverpool and St Ives

Tate first opened its doors to the public in 1897. Back then it just had one site with a small collection of British artwork. Today it has four major sites; Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. The art galleries display a national collection of British art from the 1500s to the present day. They also have an exquisite collection of international, modern and contemporary artworks.

If you are a lover of contemporary art, then the Tate Modern is the place to visit this summer. There you will find ingeniously curated exhibitions and a fantastic programme of events.

2. Whitechapel Gallery, East London

The Whitechapel Gallery is housed in a Grade II listed building designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, at the heart of London’s East End. The art gallery, which opened in 1901, is one of the best places in the country to find contemporary artwork. It has played an important role in developing the capital’s cultural landscape and has certainly put East London on the map as a place to find vibrant art.

3. Baltic, Newcastle

The Baltic Centre for contemporary art is located on the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead, Newcastle. The unusual building was converted from an old flour mill after the organisation received funding from The National Lottery (Arts Council England.) The Baltic boasts an ever-changing collection of artwork, showcasing everything from blockbuster exhibitions to the artwork of indie artists working within the local community. As well as viewing an eclectic selection of visually striking artwork, you can listen to regular artists’ talks which take place throughout the year.

4. The Common Guild

The Common Guild is a visual arts organisation based in Glasgow. It was established in 2006 and has since gone on to work in partnership with Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art. The Common Guild is known for its dynamic programmes of international contemporary art projects, exhibitions and events. The gallery is housed in a stunning Victorian building, with each room hosting a different collection. There you will also find a unique library designed by the artist Andrew Miller. The library has a wide range of art books, catalogues and publications for you to browse at your leisure.

5. National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery is located in London’s Trafalgar Square. It is home to the world’s largest collection of historically important faces and personalities. The National Portrait Gallery was the first portrait gallery in the world when it opened in 1856. The gallery houses a wide range of portrait types from photographs, to caricatures, paintings, drawings and sculptures. There you will find one of the most famous portraits in the world of William Shakespeare.

The gallery is free of charge to enter and also has one of the best roof top restaurants in London.

The UK is home to many fantastic art galleries, so whether you are visiting London, holidaying in Cornwall or taking a trip to Scotland, you will not be far away from one of our top five art galleries. A day browsing fabulous art collections from around the world will make the perfect day out for you and your family this summer. Each gallery has something different to offer from historical masterpieces to contemporary artwork.

Choosing The Right Exhibition To Promote Your Business

Finding the right trade exhibition for your company to attend is not as easy as it might seem. This article from guest author Chris Jenkinson looks at how you go about choosing one.

There is no shortage of trade shows and exhibitions these days: whatever your industry sector, you will probably be spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding which of these to attend. The great thing about trade shows is that they offer so many opportunities for networking, showcasing new products or promoting your company’s image. But you will only be able to get the best results for your company if you pick the right show: one which is prestigious, employs reputable marketing methods and attracts the most high-profile visitors. Here is how you go about finding the best exhibition to meet your needs:

  • Reason For Going: Thinking about what exactly you want to get from an exhibition will help you to decide which one to go for. If you’re looking to expand your customer base to new geographical market areas, for example, then it might be best to go for an international rather than a local event. However, if you want to introduce a new product to your existing client base then a nearby exhibition will be fine, and you should choose one that is open to the public rather than being B2B focused. Once you’ve got these objectives in place you can quickly eliminate the trade fairs in your sector that won’t help you achieve these.
  • Speak To Previous Attendees: One of the best ways to find out whether a particular exhibition is worth investing your time in is to speak to companies that have attended it in previous years. Did they find it useful, and would they go back again? If you look around you should also be able to find reviews online. In general, you will find that the more reputable trade fairs are those that are long-established, so look for ones that have been running for several years and had many repeat visitors.

Business Exhibition by OliverN5 on flickr

  • Look At The Other Attendees: Trade fairs will publish a list of attendees on their websites so you can get an idea for the kinds of business contacts you may be able to make. Do attendees include some of the biggest players in your field? If so, this could be an indication of its general prestige. It’s a good idea to set up meetings in advance of an exhibition, so are there any companies on the list you would like to speak to? Also, take note of the kinds of customer groups who have been present at previous events. Are they your target audience? If not, you’d be better off looking elsewhere as you don’t want to be wasting your time and resources.
  • Who Will Be Speaking?: Most exhibitions will have guest speaker slots so it’s worthwhile taking note of who these will be. The reason for this is twofold: firstly, a good speaker really can provide you with useful industry information; secondly, there are some fairs which will essentially allow speakers to ‘buy’ their way onto the platform purely to boost the credentials of their company. If you find out that this is the case with a certain fair you’re considering, then it’s best avoided. You really only want to be attending a credible event for genuine experts in the field.
  • Facilities: To be successful at an exhibition these days you need a stand-out booth that will draw people in. This includes top quality graphics on pop-up stands, banners and poster displays. You may also, however, want to go for some LED or touch-screen displays to allow your visitors to actively engage with what you’re selling. If you want to do this, make sure the fair you’re considering has adequate facilities to accommodate this in terms of power, space and so on.
  • Time Of Year: Another factor to bear in mind is the time the exhibition is taking place. There may be one that looks perfect, but if you want to use it to publicize a product you’re launching in September and the event isn’t until January, this is useless. Always make sure, therefore, that you bear the timings in mind.
  • PR Potential: Another big question to ask is what kind of press coverage each of the events you’re considering will be getting. Ask the trade show’s management if they have any information on who is planning to cover it: this way you can determine whether there will be any particularly good PR opportunities that would make it worth your while exhibiting.

Thankful For Fall

I love this time of year…not too hot, not too cold, and no humidity!  (It gets pretty hot and humid here in Alabama during the summer.) It’s a great day for yard work yesterday.  I noticed it was about time to rake the pine needles – we like to wait until the last one has fallen for the season!  We have 18 mature pines in our back yard, and friends always ask us if they can come gather some for their garden.  Of course we say yes…and if they rake the pine needles up themselves, even better!

I’m missing my pottery wheel again.  One day it will be time to get back to my clay…right now I’m happy doing kids’ crafts!   Above is a treasury of pottery for the Autumn season, my way of living vicariously, I suppose.

3 Ways to Make Your Photographs Even Better

Camera by potzuyoko on Flickr

A few great photography tips from guest author Jared Jaureguy.

These days, it seems like cameras are designed to do all of the heavy lifting for you. They autofocus, automatically remove red eye, and determine whether or not to use the flash based on ambient light levels. However, even though today’s digital cameras are smarter and more advanced than ever before, they still rely on you to locate and capture those moments that deserve to be immortalized on film. To put it another way, all of the technology in the world can’t help you if you don’t have an eye for photography. But don’t worry; there are two ways to acquire talent: you can be born with it, or you can learn it. Here are three tips on how to improve your photographs, even if your artistic side leaves something to be desired.

1. Learn how to capture a moment

When we encounter something, there is so much more to the experience than the image that reflects into our eyes. Seeing a famous historical landmark is a noteworthy event because it allows us to bridge the gap between the years and actually connect on an emotional level with something that changed the course of the world. The festivities surrounding a wedding are filled with joy and beauty, but they also hide the bitter-sweet pain of the end of a lifestyle and the apprehension associated with the beginning of another. When you take photos, you should be looking to capture more than just a frozen picture of how everything looked in that moment; you should try to capture the feeling of the experience. Choose a subject that has some connection to the environment. Take candid photos of their interaction with other subjects, and try to use your camera to tell a story. As with most art, it’s important to know that you’ll probably go through dozens of images that just don’t work before you get the perfect shot, so keep snapping pictures and be patient.

2. Consider lighting

Lighting is the most important element in any picture. In fact, the word photography literally means “drawing with light.” So before you click the shutter, take a moment and make note of the lighting in your image. Where is the strongest light source? If it’s directly behind the subject, you’ll end up with a silhouette. If it’s behind the camera but is too strong, your subject’s features may end up looking washed out (and if your subject is a person, they could end up squinting and ruining the photo). Lighting from directly above or below a subject will result in strange shadows, which can make for some interesting pictures if that’s what you’re after. Generally, you’ll get best results with soft, diffused lighting, such as at sunrise, sunset, or on a cloudy day. If you’re shooting inside, consider covering light sources with a sheet to reduce the harshness. Of course, high contrast can sometimes improve certain pictures and help tell a story, so be sure to experiment to discover what’s right for any particular photo.

3. Fix it with software

The best thing about digital photography is how simple it is to manipulate. Once you have your favorite pictures, download some photo editing software and set to work enhancing your image. Photo editors allow you to play with colors, contrast, and lighting. They also provide you with tools that can be used to remove blemishes, sharpen areas that may be slightly out of focus, and even remove entire undesired elements. With some practise, you’ll be able to turn your amatuer photographs into vibrant, professional level images that really shine.

So if your pictures aren’t turning out the way you want them to, don’t give up. With a few tips and a lot of practice, you’ll be able to be proud of the images that end up on your memory card. After all, the modern camera is designed to take care of the hard stuff for you; all you have to do is point and click.

4 Creative Bridal Shower Themes

Bridal Shower by tmarsee530

Got a friend who is about to get hitched? Make her bridal shower one of the most memorable events in her life. Gather all her best buds and plan out that perfect party before she will walk down the aisle.

From guest author Debra Wright, here are our bridal shower ideas to help you throw an unforgettable gathering before the bride-to-be will say “yes” on that big day.

Tea Party like the Brits

Want to incorporate the word “classy” and “elegant” to your bridal shower? An afternoon tea party would be perfect. Get inspiration from the Brits and host an English afternoon tea party. Go back in time with this elegant gathering and let everyone feel like local Londoners.

If you will have your party outdoors, find a shady area under a big tree, set up tables and chairs and decorate your table with fresh flowers. If you go for indoors, find a lovely sitting area. Serve food using fine china and silver platter for a high-society feel.

Pamper at the Spa

Wedding planning is one of the most stressful activities there is. The bride-to-be is not the only person who gets stressed –everybody else does! From the maid of honor, bridesmaids, families to the wedding planner and everyone involved get that little dose of “suffering” to make the wedding a dream come true.

To ease everybody’s tension, throw a spa party. Pamper guests with different beauty treatments and facials with aromatherapy ingredients. You can also bring in a manicurist to beautify the bridesmaids or a masseuse to help everyone relax.

Old-fashioned Slumber Party

Missed your high-school sleepovers? A slumber party would be the ideal theme! Cozy up in your favorite pajamas and bring out your fancy pillows, blankets and huggable teddy bears! Hang posters of teen heartthrobs from your generation on walls. Make the party fun and lively and watch horror movies, share ghost stories, play board games and make prank phone calls. You can even dance the night away with your girls or just be delightfully silly.

Make it Personal

Many make a huge deal about bridal showers. But at the end of the day, it’s not about the party — it’s about making the bride-to-be feel important and loved. Let the betrothed know that you are with her right from the start of your friendship all the way to her “most important day.” This is the time to take notice of her favorite things so throw a bridal shower that is uniquely her. Does she like staying up all night and watch soap marathons? Is she into baseball or soccer? Be mindful of what she likes and from there, you can then cast a theme.

Be it traditional, comedic or personalized, you can always experiment and go beyond the usual bridal showers and try your hand on something new. If you need help on wedding preparations, shop at White Runway. This online shopping store offers a wide variety of bridal accessories and lace wedding dresses. You can also find cocktail dresses and debutante dresses for parties and big events.

Debra WrightA self-professed geek, guest author Debra Wright has dreamt of being a writer since as long as she could remember. She has recently written about a number of topics online, including bridal shower themes, and hopes to get more people interested in formal dresses through her written work. Follow her on twitter: @debrawrites.
