Feeling Crafty? Here Are Some Craft Activities You Can Do With Your Kids!

There’s no doubt that all kids love to create things. Making things themselves (with a little bit of help from you!) is such a satisfying thing to do. It keeps them away from the television and computer games, and it teaches them valuable skills along the way. Most parents freak out at the idea of coming up with enough activities throughout the holidays to keep the kids occupied. Don’t panic – we’ve got loads of ideas for things you and your children can make together that you will all enjoy. Guest author Jenny Wadlow has some great ideas below!

Make Some Clothes

Kids love to sew – the chances are they have already been taught the basics at school. Give them a task such as sewing a patch on some trousers, or perhaps even making a skirt from scratch. Help them out along the way by giving them some designs to follow. You could even teach them how to use a sewing machine – they’ll get the hang of it in no time at all as long as you are there to talk them through it. Ask them what they would like to make – by the end of the summer they could have a whole new wardrobe!

Cook up a Storm

There’s nothing like making an almighty mess in the kitchen to get kids excited! Choose some simple baking recipes such as cupcakes or gingerbread men and cook them together. Everyone will love being involved, no matter what their age. You will be teaching them valuable skills such as whisking, folding and using an oven, that they will use their whole lives through. Of course then there’s the fun of letting them enjoy the fruits of their labour! Organise a tea party so they can share the spoils with their friends. Don’t forget to let them lick the bowl along the way – it’s a rite of passage!

Build a Den

Every kid loves a den, so why not set up a school holiday project where they can build their own?! They will love creating their own little hideout. It can’t be any old den though – make it special with loads of cool features and some interior design. Take them around the junk shops to choose bits and pieces for the den. If they are old enough, perhaps you could let them have a little campfire outside when it gets dark? Depending on how safe you think they’ll be they might even be allowed to camp out in it.

There are loads of other crafty things you can do with your kids – the key is in the planning. When you know a holiday is coming up, take some time to make a list of lots of activities to choose from. Make some of them indoor activities and some of them outdoor, so you always have lots of ideas no matter what the weather is like. You could also organise a sports match, or let them try to build a clay oven that you can all cook pizzas in when it’s ready. Or, how about a fishing trip or a survival course? Keep them away from that television!
